What is taught in this field

In this field, students learn the art of conducting opera and symphony orchestras. Core subjects include conducting technique, score reading and analysis, harmony, polyphony and music history. Students also learn to analyze works from different periods and styles in depth, get to know the characteristics of orchestral instruments and develop skills for working with ensembles. In opera conducting, they study work with singers and understanding stage action and the structure of a performance. In symphony conducting, they develop the ability to lead rehearsals with a large orchestra, control tempo and dynamics, and communicate effectively with performers.

Who the graduate becomes

Graduates can work as conductors of opera or symphony orchestras, and also as leaders of choirs and ensembles. Positions such as assistant conductor, music director and assistant concertmaster are also possible. In addition, graduates can teach in music schools and conservatories and take part in training young conductors.
