Design: Industrial Design

What is taught in this field

Industrial design focuses on creating the everyday objects we use, such as furniture, household appliances, vehicles, tools and toys. Specialists work on how these products look, how comfortable they are and whether they can be manufactured. During their studies, students learn:

• the basics of drawing, sketching and composition;
• form-giving and modelling, three-dimensional thinking;
• ergonomics, that is, the comfort of interaction between people and objects;
• materials and production technologies;
• computer graphics and 3D modelling software;
• building prototypes and testing them;
• skills in managing a project and presenting it.

A large part of the training is practical, and students learn to turn their ideas into real physical objects.

Who will the graduate become

A graduate becomes an industrial designer who develops concepts for new products and prepares them for production. Possible jobs and positions include:

• industrial designer;
• product designer;
• 3D modelling and visualisation specialist;
• member of the design department at a manufacturing company;
• project designer at a design studio;
• teacher or researcher (through further study and a master's programme).

Industrial design specialists are needed in many sectors and organisations: furniture and light industry enterprises, manufacturers of household appliances and electronics, construction materials production, the automotive and transport industry, as well as packaging and toy manufacturing. Graduates can also find work in design studios, advertising and marketing agencies, state and private design organisations and research institutes. Product design is becoming increasingly important for local manufacturers in Uzbekistan, which creates wide opportunities for graduates. It is also possible to open one's own design business.
