What is taught in this field

In the Geography programme, students gain a solid understanding of the Earth's natural environment, its population and economic activity. The programme is offered at 26 higher education institutions, including state institutes and universities in Andijan, Bukhara, Chirchiq, Fergana and Guliston. Core subjects include physical geography, economic and social geography, geomorphology, climatology, hydrology, soil science and cartography. The curriculum also gives an important place to the basics of ecology and to the geography of Uzbekistan and Central Asia.

Students also develop practical skills: drawing and reading maps, carrying out field research and analysing data statistically. Working with geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing data is becoming increasingly important.

What graduates can become

Graduates can follow several career paths. The most common is teaching geography in general secondary schools, academic lyceums and vocational colleges. Graduates may also work as junior researchers in scientific institutes, or as cartographers, GIS specialists, ecologists, urban and regional planners or tourism specialists.

Where graduates can work

Geography specialists are needed in education, nature protection, land resource management, meteorology and hydrology, cadastre, statistics, tourism and construction. They can work in schools and higher education institutions, research organisations, the hydrometeorological service, land cadastre and geodesy organisations, environmental control bodies, khokimiyats and urban planning departments, tourism companies and private GIS firms. There are also opportunities to find work in international projects and non-governmental organisations that carry out environmental and regional studies.
