Geology

What is taught in this field

The Geology programme covers the structure of the Earth’s crust, the formation of rocks and minerals, and the patterns in which mineral resources are distributed. Core subjects include general geology, mineralogy, petrography, stratigraphy, structural geology, paleontology, hydrogeology and engineering geology. Students also get acquainted with geophysical and geochemical methods.

During field practice, students learn to identify rocks, read and draw geological maps, collect samples and analyse them in the laboratory. They are also trained to process geological data using computer software.

What graduates become

Graduates can work as geologists, exploration geologists, hydrogeologists, engineering geologists, geophysicists or geochemists. Entry positions are usually geologist or junior research staff; with experience, graduates can move up to team leader, project manager or expert roles. Continuing to a master’s or doctoral programme opens paths to research or teaching.

Where you can work

Graduates can work in geological exploration organisations, oil and gas companies, enterprises extracting mineral deposits, and agencies that study water resources and manage groundwater. Ground surveys for construction and road projects, environmental monitoring and research institutes also offer opportunities.

Who this suits

This programme suits applicants who are interested in nature and enjoy studying rocks, minerals and the history of the Earth. Readiness to work in the field for long periods, attentiveness, patience and physical stamina are important. Interest in mathematics and chemistry, logical thinking and teamwork skills are also useful. For those who like travelling and analysing data carefully, this profession can be very rewarding.
