What you will study

The Hydrology programme focuses on rivers, lakes, reservoirs, groundwater and atmospheric moisture. Students learn how water resources are formed, how they change over time and how human activity affects them.

Core subjects include basics of hydrology, hydrometry (measuring water flow), meteorology and climatology, hydraulics, hydrogeology, water resources management, water quality and ecology. Mathematics, physics and chemistry form the essential foundation.

Practical skills play an important role: field research and observations, working with measuring instruments, and preparing hydrological calculations and forecasts. Students also learn computer tools, geographic information systems (GIS) and the use of remote sensing data.

What graduates become

Graduates can work as hydrologists, hydrometeorologists, water resources specialists, hydrological analysts or forecasters. They may also hold positions as research associates, engineer-researchers or specialists in design organisations.

A hydrologist monitors river flow, water levels and volumes, analyses data and assesses in advance the risk of floods or droughts. This profession is highly important for society, because rational distribution of water resources and nature protection depend directly on such information.

Where you can work

In Uzbekistan, hydrology specialists are needed in several areas: the hydrometeorological service system, water management and irrigation organisations, reservoirs and hydropower plants, design and research institutes, environmental and nature-protection monitoring bodies, and municipal utilities.

Specialists take part in managing river basins, irrigated lands and groundwater, as well as in projects that reduce water-related risks. Some work as teachers or researchers in educational institutions.

Who it suits

This programme suits applicants who are interested in nature and have good knowledge of geography, physics and mathematics. It is especially appealing to young people who enjoy fieldwork, travelling and spending time outdoors.

If you are attentive to detail, patient, good at precise calculations, interested in analysing data and able to work in a team, this direction may be a good match. An interest in computer technology is also useful.
