Library and Information Activities

What is taught in this field

The Library and Information Activities programme prepares specialists who collect, organise, store and provide information to users. Students study the foundations of library science and bibliography, as well as methods for classifying and cataloguing books and other information sources.

Information technology and digital resources play an important role in the curriculum. Students develop skills in working with electronic libraries, databases and information search systems. They also gain knowledge of research methodology, working with readers, communication and the organisation of information services.

Training in this field is offered at Jizzakh State Pedagogical University, the Uzbekistan State Institute of Arts and Culture (including its Nukus branch), Kokand State University, Termez State University, Tashkent University of Information Technologies and Urgench State University.

Who the graduate becomes

Graduates can work as librarians, information service specialists, bibliographers, cataloguers or officers responsible for electronic resources. Their tasks include helping readers and users find the information they need, maintaining collections and digital archives, and improving information services.

Where you can work

Specialists can find jobs in public and scientific libraries, information resource centres of schools and higher education institutions, as well as in archives, museums and research institutes. Departments working with documents and information also exist in enterprises and organisations that need such specialists. As libraries and electronic services develop in Uzbekistan, demand for staff with information technology skills is growing.

Who it suits

This field suits applicants who enjoy books, like searching for information and organising it, and enjoy communicating with people. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, responsibility and computer skills are important. Language skills, especially the ability to read sources in English and Russian, will also be helpful.
