Directing: Dramatic Theatre Directing

This field of study is offered at the Uzbekistan State Institute of Arts and Culture and at its Nukus branch. The program teaches students how to create a dramatic theatre production from initial idea to the stage.

What is taught in this field

Core subjects include theatre history, dramaturgy, fundamentals of acting, stage speech, mise-en-scene (organizing actors movement on stage) and production analysis. Students study plays in depth, analyze their central idea and system of characters, and then learn how to translate the text into the language of the stage.

Practical classes develop skills in working with actors, planning and leading rehearsals, and coordinating ideas for set design and lighting. Students take part in the creative process, starting with short scenes and moving on to full productions. At the same time, they build teamwork, time management and the ability to clearly explain and justify their artistic decisions.

Who the graduate becomes

A graduate may work in a dramatic theatre as a director, assistant director or lead creative specialist for the stage. They may also take positions that involve composing a production, managing rehearsals and working creatively with actors. Some graduates lead theatre studios, cultural centers and drama groups in educational institutions.

Where you can work

Graduates can work in theatres across Uzbekistan, including state theatres in the capital and in the regions, as well as in non-state theatre companies. Opportunities also exist in cultural and arts organizations, institutions that organize festivals and competitions, television and film projects, and children and youth theatres. Graduates may also teach drama and performing arts or work as mentors.

Imagination, observation skills, the ability to express emotions, organizational talent and teamwork are important.
