Directing: Maqom Theatre Directing

What is taught in this field

The Maqom Theatre Directing programme trains students to create stage works based on Uzbekistan's national musical heritage. Core subjects include the fundamentals of directing, stage speech and movement, dramaturgy and theatre history, as well as the history and theory of the maqom art. Students learn to develop the concept of a musical performance, work with actors and musicians, build mise-en-scène, and design the visual form of a production.

Who the graduate becomes

A graduate becomes a director of maqom theatre productions. They guide a stage work in terms of its ideas and artistic quality, assemble a creative team, and take responsibility for the finished performance. Professional roles may include stage director, artistic director, or leader of a creative production group. Their duties also include developing concert programmes and scripts for cultural events.

Where you can work

Graduates in Uzbekistan can collaborate with musical and drama theatres, philharmonic societies, concert organisations, and cultural centres. There are also opportunities to work on music programmes and artistic projects at television and film studios, or in companies that organise festivals and events. In addition, graduates can teach at children's and youth art schools and creative clubs.

Who it suits

This field suits applicants interested in performing arts, theatre, and Uzbek music. Creative thinking, organisational skills, teamwork, and a strong stage imagination are important. A good musical ear, a sense of rhythm, and the ability to express ideas clearly are also valuable. For young people who are ready to study maqom traditions in depth and are persistent and responsible, this programme can help them find their own creative path.
