Musical Theatre Directing

What is taught in this program

In the Musical Theatre Directing program, students learn the fundamentals of staging operas, operettas, musicals and other musical productions. The curriculum includes stage movement, dramaturgy, building mise-en-scène, working with actors and singers, music theory and music history. Students also become familiar with the history of theatre and contemporary stage art.

Key skills include developing a production concept, analysing a musical work, collaborating with singers and the conductor, organising rehearsals and leading a stage team. Practical classes allow students to bring their ideas to the stage.

Who the graduate becomes

A graduate becomes a musical theatre director. Their main work is staging musical performances, leading rehearsals and coordinating the work of a creative team. Graduates can work as theatre directors, stage managers, artistic leaders of musical productions or members of creative teams.

Where you can work

The profession is in demand in musical theatres, opera and ballet theatres, philharmonic societies, culture and arts centres, and private theatre studios. Graduates can also work on television and film projects, organise festivals and events, or teach in educational institutions. Since theatre and the performing arts sector in Uzbekistan is developing, graduates of this program have a range of opportunities. The program is taught at the Uzbekistan State Institute of Arts and Culture.

Who it suits

This program suits applicants who are interested in music, theatre and stage art, think creatively and enjoy teamwork. A good musical ear, memory, sense of rhythm, expressive speech and a desire to work on stage are important. Organisational skills and respect for other people's views are also very useful for a director. If you enjoy imagining how a performance comes to life on stage, this program may be a good fit for you.
