Folk Art: Traditional Vocal Performance

This field is dedicated to the in-depth study of our people's rich musical heritage. Training is provided at the O‘zbek milliy musiqa sanʼati instituti, the O‘zbekiston davlat sanʼat va madaniyat instituti, and its Nukus branch.

What is taught in this field

Students learn the fundamentals of traditional song and maqom performance. Core subjects include solfeggio, folk songs and maqom performance, voice training, Uzbek music theory, and music history. Students also develop skills in performing with national instruments. Great importance is placed on the master–apprentice tradition, where young performers learn ancient techniques directly from their teachers. Stage speech, ensemble performance, and concert preparation are also important parts of the curriculum.

Who graduates become

Graduates can work as traditional singers, soloists, or ensemble members. They may become creative performers who promote folk songs and maqoms and lead their own stage activities. They can also work as teachers and mentors in music schools and arts clubs, or collaborate with stage directors and concert organizers. Some graduates find work as researchers of national music.
