Folk Art: Folklore Performance

What is taught in this field

The programme offers in-depth study of oral folk art and traditional performing arts. Students work with Uzbek folk songs, dastans, maqom and traditional instrumental performance. Core subjects include the history of folklore works, folk music theory, traditional dance and stage performance, as well as playing Uzbek folk instruments.

Students also develop performance skills, confidence on stage, ensemble work, and methods of presenting folk traditions to a modern audience. The field is taught at the Uzbekistan State Institute of Arts and Culture, its Nukus branch, and Kokand State University.

Who will the graduate become

A graduate may work as a performer in folklore ensembles and folk art groups, as a creative staff member in culture centres, as a folk instrument performer, or as a solo vocalist. They may also serve as an assistant to the director of folk stage groups, work as a music teacher, or lead a studio circle.

In Uzbekistan, graduates can find work in culture and arts institutions, folk art centres, philharmonic societies, theatres and concert organisations, as well as in culture houses and out-of-school education institutions. National entertainment programmes in tourism and international cultural events also offer wide opportunities. Some graduates work as creative educators in the education sector.
