Articles 27/06/2025 "It's not about the diploma, but the opportunity" - Why has the number of applicants decreased over the past 15 years?

2011. Nearly half a million young men and women, driven by their dreams, aspired to enter universities. At that time, over 418,000 applicants submitted documents to higher education institutions across Uzbekistan. Over the years, this figure changed dramatically, reaching a record high of 1.48 million in 2020. However, after that peak, a gradual decline began. As of 2025, this number has dropped to 732 thousand.

What does this indicate? Has interest in higher education waned? Or has young people's approach to life, career, and education changed?

🧭 A brief look at historical dynamics:

2011 - 418,598 applicants

2015 - 605,836 applicants

2019 - 1,066,925 applicants

2020 - 1,484,085 applicants (peak point)

2025 - 732,411 applicants

These figures are not just statistics - they represent changes in young people's decisions, dreams, and trends.

📲 Online revolution and records

In 2020, due to the pandemic, the application process was conducted entirely online for the first time. Simultaneously, bureaucratic barriers significantly decreased, allowing applications from anywhere, at any time, in just 5 minutes. Naturally, this factor led to a record influx of applicants.

However, over time, this flow is gradually receding. Why?

📉 Main factors affecting the decrease in the number of applicants:

End of the "closed period" for distance education - in recent years, thousands of workers who had long aspired to higher education but lacked the opportunity applied to distance learning departments. Now this need has decreased.

Increase in private universities - today, there is at least one prestigious private university in each region. This has significantly reduced the burden on state universities.

Renaissance of colleges and technical schools - attention to vocational education has increased. Among young people, the slogan "Not a diploma in 3 years, but a profession in 1 year!" is becoming a reality.

Modern training centers and IT courses - especially centers for programming, graphic design, SMM, and language learning are attracting young people. This is an important trend in an era where real skills, not diplomas, are in demand.

Shift in social perceptions - not having higher education is no longer considered shameful. Many understand that achieving success in life requires not only a diploma but also initiative, knowledge, and practical skills.

🎯 What's really happening?

Today, young people are making conscious choices. Now they are trying to answer not "I'm studying for a diploma" but "What do I want to become?" Therefore, it's incorrect to interpret the decrease in applicant numbers solely as "lack of interest." On the contrary, this signals the beginning of a period of quality choices.

For today's youth, higher education is not the only path. They are seeking more directions, more options, and practical solutions. The education system must adapt to these changes through proper analysis.

For a good life, it's no longer just about a diploma on paper, but real knowledge, creative thinking, and professional skills that matter.
