In Tashkent, the shortage of student places in schools reached 141,000 in the 2025–2026 academic year. This was announced during a presentation of social infrastructure development projects for the capital, which Shavkat Mirziyoyev also reviewed.

Why is the shortage growing?

According to the data, the number of students is expected to rise by 71,000, or 14 percent, over the next five years. As a result, the seat shortage could reach 212,000 by the 2030–2031 academic year.

What is planned?

  • By 2030, a total of 126,000 new student places are planned: 48,000 funded from the republican budget and 78,000 from local budgets.
  • For the 2026–2027 academic year, 24 new schools with a total capacity of 38,000 seats have been designed, covering 64.6 thousand square meters.
  • The standard designs of new schools will include 17 additional features, such as extra teaching areas, libraries, flexible halls for sports and cultural events, inclusive education rooms, ramps and elevators.

The student-to-classroom load ratio is also expected to fall from the current 1.4 to 1.2 by 2030. This is an important indicator aimed at easing pressure on classrooms.

Cooperation with private centers

Cooperation between private education centers and public schools will be established. This will create conditions for students to prepare for universities and learn foreign languages within their own schools.

It will be worth watching how classroom crowding changes once these projects are implemented.
