What is taught in this field

The Geodesy and Geoinformatics program deals with determining the shape and dimensions of the Earth and the position of objects on its surface, as well as with collecting, storing and analyzing geographic data. During their studies, students learn the following core subjects:

  • higher geodesy and the fundamentals of geodesy;
  • topography and cartography;
  • land management and cadastre;
  • photogrammetry and remote sensing;
  • satellite navigation technologies (GPS/GNSS);
  • geographic information systems (GIS) and databases.

Practical classes develop skills in working with modern geodetic instruments, GPS receivers and computer software. Students learn to combine field surveys with office data processing.

Who the graduate becomes

Graduates become geodesists, cartographers or GIS specialists. Their main professional roles include:

  • surveying engineer (measurements for construction and production facilities);
  • cartographer and topographer;
  • GIS specialist (GIS analyst);
  • specialist in land cadastre and monitoring;
  • photogrammetrist or remote sensing analyst.

Where you can work

Specialists in geodesy and geoinformatics are in demand in various organizations across Uzbekistan. They can work in the following areas:

  • land resources and cadastre agencies;
  • construction, design and engineering survey companies;
  • city hokimiyats and regional administration bodies;
  • agriculture and water management systems;
  • geological and mining enterprises related to mineral resources;
  • research institutes and educational institutions.

This program is currently offered at 17 higher education institutions. Among them are the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers National Research University, the University of Geological Sciences and the National University of Uzbekistan.

Who this suits

This program suits applicants who:

  • are interested in mathematics and physics and enjoy precise calculations;
  • like maps, nature and working outdoors;
  • are keen on computer technologies and programming;
  • are attentive, patient and able to work in a team.

If you want to measure terrain, create maps and work with digital data, geodesy and geoinformatics may be a good choice for you. Before deciding, we recommend reviewing the curriculum and facilities of the institution you are considering.
