A new programme aimed at developing a reading culture among young people has been launched. The “National Reading Movement” covers pupils in grades 1–11 of general education schools. It is implemented jointly by the Youth Affairs Agency, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, the Writers’ Union of Uzbekistan, the Republican Centre for Spirituality and Enlightenment, and the Alisher Navoi National Library of Uzbekistan.
Participants are divided by age into three groups: grades 1–5, grades 6–8 and grades 9–11. Each group has its own reading list, which includes Uzbek and world literature, as well as artistic, historical and spiritual-educational works written for children and teenagers.
The competition is held on an electronic platform. At the first stage, pupils are assessed on whether they have read the recommended books and understood them. Later stages include tests, creative written work and oral interviews. The judges look not only at how many books were read, but also at the ability to analyse a text, express independent views and speak well.
An appeals commission will review complaints about the results. Participants may apply to it within 15 days after the results are announced.
The programme aims to make reading an essential part of young people’s lives. For parents and teachers, it is another opportunity to encourage children to read.
