The Karakalpak Medical Institute was established by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan on October 1, 1991, with the aim of training highly qualified medical personnel for the Aral Sea region, improving their qualifications, and strengthening the health of the local population.

By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 4598 "On the Establishment of the Karakalpak Medical Institute" dated February 14, 2020, the Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute (TashPMI) was transformed into the Karakalpak Medical Institute (KMI).
The Karakalpak Medical Institute serves as a training center for medical personnel in the Aral Sea region and is considered one of the best higher educational institutions in Uzbekistan. Students from all regions of Uzbekistan, as well as the cities of Tashkent, Samarkand, and Andijan, study here. In recent years, students from Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Russia have also been admitted to the institute.

Education at the institute is conducted in three languages: Karakalpak, Uzbek, and Russian. Additionally, academic groups taught in English have been established. The educational process is carried out based on the state educational standard.
More than 20 medical institutions in the Republic of Karakalpakstan serve as the institute's clinical base, where students reinforce their theoretical knowledge and acquire practical skills.

Currently, the institute trains more than 1,800 bachelors in 6 areas, clinical residents and masters in 32 areas. Doctors from all regions of Karakalpakstan are undergoing advanced training and retraining.
Over 34 years, the institute has trained more than 4,000 graduates and more than 800 clinical interns working in more than 10 countries around the world. Students are laureates of the Presidential Scholarship of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Zulfiya State Prize, scholarships of the Medical Association of Uzbekistan, the Gold Medal of the International Red Cross Society, as well as winners of international tournaments and conferences.

Along with national universities and civil institutes, the institute's partners are leading medical universities in Austria, France, Italy, Korea, Bulgaria, Russia, and other countries. Annual joint international conferences, seminars, master classes, and exchange of experience between students and teachers are held on topical issues of healthcare and higher medical education.

The Institute offers the following:

Pharmacy;
Preventive Medicine.

Currently, the institute has 2 faculties (I Medical Faculty, II Medical Faculty) and about 18 departments, 2,800 students study in 9 bachelor's degree programs, 11 students in 8 master's degree programs, and 39 students in 16 clinical residency programs.
