Overview

The European University Institute (EUI) provides the Policy Leader Fellowship, a residency program in Italy that covers the costs of policy specialists. It is planned that the Florence School of Transnational Governance will allocate approximately 20-25 grants for the program.

The grant is offered for a period of five or ten months:

  • Five-month period: September 2025 to January 2026 or February 2026 to June 2026;
  • Ten months: September 2025 to June 2026.

The residency program will be held in Florence, Italy.

For reference: The Policy Leader Fellowship (PLF) is a residency program at the Florentine Transnational School of Governance (STG) for mid-career policy professionals. This unique program is hosted at one of the most prestigious research institutions in Europe, and participants are provided with in-depth information about EU policy development processes.

The program is designed to engage individuals with diverse practical experience in policymaking around the world and does not require academic training. In addition to direct access to the community of professors and researchers of STG and EUI, participants learn from each other in the field and establish regular professional and personal connections.

Acceptance Terms

  • Professionals with at least 10 years of professional experience in the field of politics may participate;
  • A bachelor's degree (or equivalent) is required (a PhD degree is not required);
  • Knowledge of English at the C1 level is required. The following language proficiency certificates may be issued:

TOEFL;

IELTS;

CAE;

TOEIC;

BEC.

  • Participants must reside in the territory of Florence during the program. Because the program cannot be implemented online;
  • The candidate must be open-minded, inquisitive, enthusiastic and capable of independently performing the activities presented in the work plan.

Evaluation criteria:

  • Achievements;
  • The candidate's direction;
  • Work plan. Applicants will be assessed based on the content of the work plan, as well as its implementation, applicability within the framework of transnational policy and potential impact.
  • Purpose of participation in the program and plans for implementation.

Note: An English language certificate is not required as part of the application, but successful candidates will be invited to an interview in English and will be asked to provide a certificate/confirmation of registration.

Benefits

  • 2,500 euros per month;
  • Travel costs to and from will be reimbursed (up to €1,200):
  • Economy-class airline ticket;
  • By rail or by car.
  • Funds are allocated for family allowances (if available).

Important: The applicant must disclose all information if they have another grant or source of income. The amount of the grant will be determined at a lower rate (at least €1.750 per month) depending on the amount of additional income (after the relevant supporting documents are produced).

  • CV (maximum 3 pages);
  • Brief biography (maximum 250 words). It serves as a summary of the candidate profile for the selection process and is also used for communication purposes if the applicant has been accepted into the program;
  • Two recommendations (the deadline for submitting a recommendation is January 31, 2025, at 18:00);
  • A copy of the certificate of higher education;
  • The motivation letter (maximum 1000 words) should contain information about the main reasons for the applicant's application, the goals to be implemented during the program, the interest in specific transnational policy issues and the future professional aspirations of the participant;
  • Work plan (maximum 2500 words);
  • Optional work samples (maximum 2 samples).
