One language is out of use every two weeks

According to the UN report, the most difficult languages to learn in the world are Mandarin, Arabic, Korean, and Japanese.

Every two weeks, humanity loses one language and, along with it, a unique part of its cultural and intellectual heritage. This is stated in the United Nations report.

Every year, from 10 to 20 languages disappear from spoken language

Today there are about 7,000 languages in the world. These languages are distributed to varying degrees depending on geographical, historical, and social aspects.

Every year around the world, 10-20 languages completely fall out of use. This mainly applies to the languages of small ethnic groups and occurs mainly for the following reasons:

Small language-speaking communities migrate to larger cities, transitioning to dominant languages.

In some countries, only official languages are used in schools and government offices, which leads to the disappearance of minor languages.

National or regional languages disappear in places where they are prohibited or not supported.

  • Language preservation efforts
  • Many countries and organizations are doing the following to preserve endangered languages:
  • Language education and textbook creation
  • Granting official status and legal protection
  • Language development through modern technologies
  • Organization of cultural events and folklore expeditions

International Mother Language Day

February 21 is celebrated annually in the world as the International Mother Language. International Mother Language Day was first proclaimed by UNESCO in 1999 and later approved by the UN General Assembly. This day emphasizes the role of languages in promoting inclusion and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Multilingual education not only contributes to the creation of inclusive societies, but also helps to preserve minorities and indigenous languages.

In general, the languages of the world are developing dynamically, some becoming widespread, displacing other languages, and some disappearing. Therefore, every language is a part of cultural heritage, and their preservation and development are of great importance.
