  This educational institution taught subjects such as history, ethnography, geography, local history, Islamic history and Muslim jurisprudence of Turkestan and neighboring foreign Eastern countries, as well as the languages and literatures of the peoples of the East.

   In November 1918, the Turkestan Institute of Oriental Studies was established in Tashkent. This institute, as the first higher educational institution of Oriental studies in the history of Central Asia, began training qualified specialists in various fields of Oriental studies for neighboring countries.

  According to official data, in the 1922-1923 academic year, 210 students attended the Turkestan Institute of Oriental Studies. Only 16 percent of them were children of indigenous peoples. In 1924, the Turkestan Institute of Oriental Studies was merged into the Central Asian State University as a faculty.

  In the early stages of Oriental studies, within a short period of time, A.K. Borovkov, V.V. Reshetov, K. Yudakhin, and I.A. Kissen studied this scientific institution. Prominent linguists such as R.L. Nemenova, famous historians and ethnographers such as P.P. Ivanov, M.R. Ivanova, M. Masson, V.A. Shiglkin, O.A. Sukhareva, famous writers such as Mukhtar Auezov, Sotim Ulugzade, and orientalists such as D.G. Voronovsky have developed.

  In 1990, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the university was established on the basis of the Oriental Faculty of Tashkent State University. Soon after, on July 15, 1991, this institute was transformed into the Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies by a decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov.

      In accordance with the development and development strategies of New Uzbekistan, large-scale reforms have begun to be implemented in the higher education system, including the definition of new horizons for oriental science and education, and in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated April 16, 2020, No. PP-4680 "On Measures to Fundamentally Improve the System of Personnel Training and Enhance Scientific Potential in the Field of Oriental Studies," the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies was established on the basis of the Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies.

  Today, there are 28 departments at the University of Oriental Studies. Among the graduates of the institute, they are working as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Uzbekistan in a number of large and prestigious countries of the world, including the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Turkey, Belgium, Israel, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

  Over the past period, the University of Oriental Studies has prepared more than 400 candidates and more than 80 doctors of science. Eight scientists are academicians of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, 14 orientalists are distinguished scientists of the Republic of Uzbekistan, 12 are laureates of the state awards named after Beruni and Hamza, 7 are laureates of the international awards named after Firdawsi, Ahmad Yasawi, Mahmud Qagari, Jawaharlal Nehru and Imam al-Bukhari. In addition, a number of orientalists were awarded the honorary titles of "Honored Cultural Worker of the Republic of Uzbekistan," "Honored Youth Mentor of the Republic of Uzbekistan," and 8 orientalists were awarded the orders of "El-yurt hurmati," "Buyuk xizmatlari uchun," "Mehnat shuhrati."

  Currently, the University of Oriental Studies has 25 departments and the following faculties:

Faculty of Oriental Philology and Translation Studies:

  • Department of Arabic Philology;
  • The Department of Iranian-Afghan Philology;
  • Department of Languages of South and Southeast Asia;
  • Urdu language, literature, culture and history of Pakistan;
  • The Department of Classical Philology and Literary Source Studies;
  • The Department of Translation Studies and International Journalism;
  • The Department of Literature and Comparative Literature of Eastern Countries;
  • Theoretical and applied linguistics.

Faculty of Oriental Civilization and History:

  • Department of History and Anthropology of Eastern Countries;
  • Department of History and Ethnology of the Peoples of Central Asia;
  • The Department of Eastern Philosophy and Culture;
  • Department of Pedagogy and Psychology;
  • The Department of Source Studies and Sufi Hermeneutics.

Faculty of Economics, Politics and Tourism of Eastern Countries:

  • The Department of Eastern Economics;
  • Department of Eastern Policy and International Relations;
  • Department of Foreign Economic Activity and Tourism;
  • Department of Mathematics and General Economics.

Faculty of Chinese Studies:

  • Department of Chinese Philology;
  • Department of Chinese History, Culture, Politics, and Economics.

Faculty of Korean Studies:

  • Department of Korean Philology;
  • Department of Korean History, Culture, Politics, and Economics.

Faculty of Japanese Studies:

  • Department of Japanese Philology;
  • Department of History, Culture, Politics, and Economics of Japan.

Faculty of Turkology:

  • The Department of Turkish Philology;
  • The Department of History, Culture, Politics, and Economics of Turkic Peoples;
  • The Department of Uzbek Language and Literature;
  • Department of Western Languages.

  The University prepares specialists in the following areas at the bachelor's and master's levels:

  To date, the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies (TGUO) has established cooperation with about 100 foreign higher educational institutions and organizations. In particular, a number of prestigious universities and organizations of Japan, China, the Republic of Korea, India, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, the USA, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, and CIS countries.

  A total of 290 students live in the campus of the university. Of these, 140 are girls and 150 are boys. The gymnasium and library are always open for students to spend their free time meaningfully.
