Regarding the history of Tashkent State University of Economics, due to the growing demand for economists in the country, on August 13, 1931, based on a decision of the Council of People's Commissars of the former Soviet Union, the Central Asian Institute of Finance and Economics was established on the basis of the Economics and Social Sciences faculties of Turkestan State University. On September 1, 1931, the institute officially began its operations.

Over the years, the institute has continuously improved and perfected its teaching methods, research activities, and educational work. In 1939, the first postgraduate program was established at the institute, where five people studied initially, and within five years, this number reached 42.
The Leningrad Accounts and Economics Institute joined the Tashkent Financial and Economic Institute in 1946 due to its evacuation to Almaty during World War II.
As a result, two new faculties of credit and economics and accounting and economics were opened. Due to the serious situation in the country, the institute pays great attention to the training of personnel for the financial and banking systems.
Since June 19, 1991, the Faculty of Economics, Accounting and Auditing, Corporate Governance, Information Systems in Economics and International Tourism, the Department of Master's and Outreach, and 24 departments have been operating at the university.
In 1993, a branch of the university was established in Samarkand. In 2024, in accordance with the decision of the head of state Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the Tashkent Financial Institute and the Fiscal Institute under the State Tax Committee were added to the Tashkent State Economic University.
