Overview
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, located in the United States, provides a Summer Student Fellowship research program for undergraduate students in the ocean and engineering sciences.

Scholarships are awarded for the implementation of an independent research project under the guidance of special staff appointed by the university. Depending on the direction of the program, it is planned to last 10-12 weeks.

Acceptance Terms

  • By the start of the program, participants can:
  • Graduated from the 3rd year of the 4-year bachelor's program;
  • Graduated from the 2nd year of the 3-year bachelor's program;
  • Must have completed the 3rd year of a 5-year bachelor's program.
  • Knowledge of English at the level of participation in the program;
  • Candidates should be interested in ocean sciences, oceanographic engineering, or marine policy sciences;
  • Preference shall be given to students studying in the fields of science or engineering, including biology, chemistry, engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics, meteorology, physics, oceanography and marine policy;
  • The selection takes into account the candidate's interests, past scientific achievements, and future goals.

Note: Students who have completed their bachelor's degree or their final year are not eligible to participate.

The main goal of the program is to introduce young people to the fundamentals of ocean science and engineering, as well as to teach advanced methods of oceanography. During the program, participants will learn how to collect data and sample techniques related to advanced oceanographic instruments and technologies.

Benefits

  • A stipend of $700 per week is awarded;
  • $700 will be allocated for travel expenses;
  • Provided with housing;
  • The opportunity to get acquainted with more than 200 research papers in the relevant field;
  • The scientific supervisor will assist in the selection and continuation of the research project;
  • Support in obtaining a J-1 visa (a language proficiency certificate is required to obtain a visa).

Important: International students must pay taxes in the form of 14% of their income for scholarship fees, travel expenses, and accommodation fees. This tax is withheld from their scholarships.
