Mirzo Ulugbek National University of Uzbekistan (NUUz) is a domestic higher educational institution with centuries-old history and experience. The main goal of establishing the university was to develop higher education in Uzbekistan and Central Asia, train local personnel, and develop science.
At the beginning of the 20th century, due to the rapid development of the Tashkent and Turkestan regions and the increase in the number of educated people who graduated from gymnasiums in Tashkent and Samarkand, teacher seminaries in Tashkent and other secondary educational institutions, the question of opening a higher educational institution - a university that meets the highest requirements of the time - was raised sharply.
The preparatory work was carried out by the public and the regional administration. The budget and other necessary documents for the opening of a university in Tashkent were prepared by 1914. However, the First World War hampered the plans.
Despite this, there was still a need to open a higher educational institution in the region, so at the III Regional Congress of the Turkestan Soviets, held on November 15-22, 1917, in Tashkent, it was decided to open a higher educational institution here.
The first roots of the national university are considered to be the People's University, which was opened in 1918. At the opening of this educational institution, great initiative was shown by the Jadids, including Munavvarkori Abdurashidkhanov, who was able to open a higher educational institution, which made it possible to receive an equal education in cooperation with representatives of the local population. On May 12, 1918, the official opening ceremony of the Muslim People's University was held in the old part of Tashkent.
The university, which began its activities in 1918 in Tashkent as the Turkestan People's University, functioned under different names in different years. Each change led to the rise of educational directions and scientific activity to a new level.
