Guliston State University commenced its operations in 1965. Initially established on the foundation of the Syrdarya State Pedagogical Institute (SDPI), the university has evolved into a crucial hub for the education sector due to its significant growth in recent years. On July 17, 1966, the university was named after Gafur Gulom.

The university, situated in the multinational region of Mirzachul, was established to meet the demand for educators and scientific specialists through schools operating in Uzbek, Kazakh, Russian, and Tajik languages. The creation of a higher education institution in this area was a crucial decision that aligned with the requirements of the time.

In February 1992, a resolution was passed to establish a university in the Syrdarya region. Since then, Gulistan State University has evolved into a prestigious center of higher education in the region.

Currently, 16,942 students are studying at the university. Students are enrolled in the following faculties:

• Faculty of Information Technologies and Physics-Mathematics;

• Faculty of Philology;

• Faculty of Natural Sciences;

• Faculty of Psychology and Social Sciences.

According to the 2025 structure, the university has expanded the list of specialties taught at the bachelor's and master's levels. Today, the university trains specialists in the following areas:

• Agrochemistry and Soil Science;

• Agronomy;

• Applied Mathematics;

• Applied Arts: Artistic Pottery;

• Information Systems and Technologies;

• Banking;

• Biology;

• Biotechnology;

• Business Management;

• Accounting;

• Instrumental Performance (Folk Instruments);

• Ecology and Environmental Protection;

• Philology and Language Teaching: English;

• Sports Activities: Football, Wrestling, Volleyball;

These areas are focused on training skilled specialists in various modern fields.

Conditions for Students

Gulistan State University has undertaken significant efforts to provide comfortable living conditions for its students. The university has 4 student dormitories with a total capacity of 2,094 places.

• Student Dormitory No. 1: 4-story, accommodating 822 students;

• Student Dormitory No. 2: 4-story, accommodating 772 students;

• Student Dormitory No. 3: 4-story, accommodating 350 students;

• Student Dormitory No. 4: 2-story, accommodating 150 students.

All necessary amenities have been established in the student dormitories. For instance, Dormitories No. 1 and No. 3 have medical rooms. Additionally, separate libraries, sports rooms (fitness), music and fine arts rooms, and computer rooms have been set up for students in Dormitories No. 1 and No. 2. These rooms are equipped with the necessary sports equipment, musical instruments, and computers. Dormitory No. 1 features a barbershop, while Dormitory No. 2 has a sewing room, providing added convenience for students.

Guliston State University has established effective cooperation not only with higher education institutions in our republic but also abroad. The university continues to strengthen ties with a number of major educational institutions in order to expand its international collaborations.
